Ost is the mysterious woman who appears before Naofumi claiming to be the familiar of the Spirit Tortoise, begging him to kill her to stop the beast's rampage. Gentle, apologetic and hiding the truth about what she is, she carries one of Season 2's saddest stories, a guardian whose duty and existence are the same curse.

Appearance

Ost is a graceful woman with long pale hair, gentle eyes and an otherworldly calm, dressed in elegant white-and-green robes with tortoise-shell motifs. She looks like a shrine maiden from a country that does not exist, and carries herself with an apologetic softness: always slightly bowing, always asking forgiveness for the burden she is about to place on you. There is something faintly translucent about her presence, as if she belongs partly elsewhere. The sadness in her expression is not performance: she knows exactly what she is asking, and what it will cost everyone, including her.

Personality

Ost is gentle, apologetic and quietly resolute. She asks a stranger to kill her with the manners of someone requesting directions, and apologises for the trouble, the courtesy of a being who has spent a very long time serving a purpose she did not choose. She hides what she is not from malice but from duty, and her honesty about everything else makes the omission ache. In the party's company she shows a real, wistful warmth: she likes these people, in what she knows is borrowed time, and that liking is the bravest thing about her.

Ost Horai appears before Naofumi's party as the Spirit Tortoise stirs, one of the great guardian beasts whose awakening brings catastrophe wherever it walks. She introduces herself as the Tortoise's familiar and begs the Shield Hero for an impossible favour: to kill her, because only that will stop the beast's rampage. Gentle, evasive and carrying a truth about herself she cannot simply say, she guides the party toward the Tortoise's back and the country living there in its shadow. Her story is one of Season 2's saddest: a guardian whose duty and whose very existence are the same curse, asking the one hero she trusts to end it.
