Mumen Rider
From One Punch Man
Mumen Rider is a supporting character in One Punch Man, the top hero of C-Class, a man with no powers, no weapons and a bicycle, who charges in anyway because retreating was never an option. His courage is the series' moral centre. He is voiced by Yūichi Nakamura in Japanese and Robbie Daymond in English.
About Mumen Rider
Mumen Rider is the top hero of C-Class: a man with no powers, no weapons and a bicycle, named the Justice Cyclist. He knows he cannot win, and charges in anyway, standing shaking before the Deep Sea King because retreating was never an option. His courage, applauded by strangers who finally see it, is the moral centre of One Punch Man: heroism measured by heart, not power.
Appearance
Mumen Rider, real name Satoru, is an ordinary-looking young man in a cyclist's outfit: a green bicycle helmet, goggles, padded suit and his beloved bicycle, Justice. Nothing about him suggests a hero of any class, which is the point of every scene he is in. His design peaks in the rain against the Deep Sea King: soaked, shaking, bicycle thrown aside, a completely normal man standing where professionals have fallen.
Personality
Mumen Rider is sincerity itself: earnest, self-aware and completely without vanity. He knows exactly how weak he is, he says so, shaking, in the rain, and has decided that this changes nothing about what a hero should do. He is kind to civilians, respectful to every rank, and incapable of the cynicism the Association runs on. In a series about absurd power, Mumen Rider is its moral measuring stick: the man with nothing but heart, against whom everyone else's strength is quietly weighed.
Background & Story
Satoru is the top-ranked hero of C-Class, the Hero Association's lowest tier, and he has stayed there because he has no powers, no weapons and no special talent, only a licence, a bicycle and an unbreakable refusal to run. He patrols his city, helps with evacuations and arrives at monster scenes he cannot possibly win, because arriving is the job. His stand against the Deep Sea King, beaten, bleeding, delivering a speech about why he fights anyway while a crowd finally sees him, becomes one of the series' defining moments and earns him the respect of heroes and readers far above his rank.
Powers & Abilities
- Courage Without Power: Mumen Rider has no abilities at all, his 'power' is that he charges in anyway, buying time for civilians and stronger heroes with his own body.
- Justice (Bicycle): His bicycle, Justice, is his transport, his ram and occasionally his thrown weapon, the most ordinary equipment in the hero world, used without embarrassment.
Key Relationships
- Saitama: A fellow low-rank hero whose quiet understanding after the Deep Sea King fight is one of the few recognitions Saitama receives from a peer.
- Garou: The hero hunter, whose path crosses the C-Class hero's, Garou's philosophy has no comfortable answer for a man like Mumen Rider.
- Bang: An S-Class elder who treats the C-Class cyclist with the respect his conduct earns, rank means little to Bang next to spirit.
