Mavis Vermillion
From Fairy Tail
Mavis Vermillion is a supporting character in Fairy Tail, the First Master and founder of the Fairy Tail guild, called the Fairy Tactician, whose spirit still guides the guild long after her body's time stopped. She is voiced by Mamiko Noto in Japanese and Leah Clark in English.
About Mavis Vermillion
The first master and founder of Fairy Tail, a brilliant strategist whose plans earned her the title Fairy Tactician. Mavis appears as a young girl long after her era, guiding the guild through its worst battles, including the Grand Magic Games and the Alvarez war. Her past is bound to Zeref's by the same curse, and her story, told in Fairy Tail Zero, explains both the guild's founding and its greatest secret, Fairy Heart.
Appearance
Mavis appears as a small, youthful girl with very long, wavy blonde hair reaching her feet, large green eyes and two tiny wing-like tufts above her ears. She wears a soft pink layered dress and is almost always barefoot. She looks about thirteen and has looked that way for a century, an effect of the same curse that froze Zeref. As a spirit she is translucent to most eyes; only those bearing Fairy Tail's emblem can see her at all.
Personality
Mavis looks about thirteen and has been dead, technically, for most of a century. Neither fact slows her down. She's Fairy Tail's founder and still its biggest fan, treating every member as one of her kids and suffering personally when they hurt. The cheerfulness is real, but don't mistake it for innocence. She out-thought armies as a teenage strategist, earned the name Fairy Tactician, and built the guild's whole philosophy, comrades before everything, out of her own losses. The Ankhseram curse gave her eternity and took almost everything else. When war comes to her guild anyway, she's the calmest person on the field, and usually three moves ahead of it.
Background & Story
Mavis was an orphaned servant girl on Tenrou Island, working for a harsh guild while secretly devouring its library. When war reached the island she met the treasure hunters who became Fairy Tail's founders, learned magic from a captive Zeref himself, including the Law spell that stunted her growth, and in X686 founded the Fairy Tail guild in Magnolia with her friends. Her use of Fairy Law's prototype froze her body entirely; for decades the guild believed her simply dead, while her spirit watched over them from Tenrou. In the Alvarez war she finally steps onto the field in person, to end the story she and Zeref began a century earlier.
Powers & Abilities
- Fairy Law, Fairy Glitter and Fairy Sphere: Mavis created Fairy Tail's three grand spells, holy judgement, a blast of collected starlight, and a perfect sphere of defence that froze Tenrou Island in time for seven years.
- Illusion magic: Her first magic and still her favourite: illusions so complete they can staff an entire fake guild, as Cait Shelter's ghosts showed.
- Master strategy: The Fairy Tactician's true weapon, she reads battlefields whole, predicting enemy movements minutes ahead and turning hopeless odds into victories.
Key Relationships
- Zeref Dragneel: Her teacher, fellow bearer of the Ankhseram curse, and the love and tragedy at the centre of her long life.
- Makarov Dreyar: The Third Master who inherited her guild and guards her body's resting place beneath the hall.
- Lucy Heartfilia: One of the guild members Mavis guides most directly in the final war, a fellow keeper of Fairy Tail's heart.
