Johnny Joestar

From JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run

Quick Answer

Johnny Joestar is the main character of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run, a former racing prodigy who lost the use of his legs and enters a cross-country horse race to learn Gyro Zeppeli's Spin. His Stand is Tusk. He is voiced by Shogo Sakata in Japanese and Daman Mills in English.

About Johnny Joestar

Johnny Joestar was a racing prodigy, a genius jockey whose arrogance cost him everything when a shooting left him unable to walk. Bitter and forgotten, he comes to watch the Steel Ball Run start and touches Gyro Zeppeli's spinning steel ball: for one moment, his legs move. Johnny enters the race on the spot, chasing the secret of the Spin across America.

Appearance

Johnny is a slim young man with shoulder-length blond hair and blue eyes, usually seen in his wheelchair or on horseback. He wears a pale hooded top patterned with stars, blue trousers and a distinctive hat marked with a horseshoe and a dark horse silhouette. His fingernails are painted blue, a detail that becomes a weapon once his Stand awakens. Off the horse he moves with powerful arms, hauling himself with the strength of a working jockey.

Personality

Johnny begins the race bitter, self-pitying and quietly furious at the world. Fame came to him too young and vanished with one gunshot, and he expects nothing from anyone. The race changes him slowly: under Gyro's blunt teaching he becomes stubborn, brave and even ruthless when survival demands it, yet he keeps a dry wit and a deep loyalty to the partner who treated him as a rider, not an invalid. His growth from despair to determination is the emotional spine of Steel Ball Run.

Background & Story

Born Jonathan Joestar, Johnny was a horse-racing prodigy who won the Kentucky Derby at sixteen and let success make him arrogant. One night, after he cut a theatre queue through bribery, the young man he had displaced shot him in the back. Paralysed from the waist down and abandoned by fame and family, Johnny drifted to San Diego to watch the start of the Steel Ball Run, a race across America. There he saw Gyro Zeppeli duel with spinning steel balls, and when Johnny touched one, his dead legs moved. He entered the race on the spot, riding Slow Dancer, determined to follow Gyro and master the Spin.

Powers & Abilities

  • The Spin: The rotational technique Johnny learns from Gyro; its golden energy briefly stirred his paralysed legs the first time he touched a spinning steel ball, and it powers everything he learns afterwards.

  • Tusk ACT1: Johnny's Stand lets him spin his own fingernails and fire them like bullets, reloading as they regrow.
  • Tusk ACT2: Applying the Golden Rectangle to his nail shots, Johnny's bullets leave holes that keep moving and tracking their target after impact.
  • Tusk ACT4: Tusk's final form harnesses the infinite rotation of a galloping horse, producing shots whose spinning energy cannot be stopped or outrun once they land.

Key Relationships

  • Gyro Zeppeli: His teacher in the Spin, his race partner and his closest friend, the man who looked at Johnny and saw a rider, not a cripple.
  • Diego Brando: A rival from his racing days whose talent Johnny both respects and resents; Diego races to prove he is better than everyone, Johnny included.
  • Lucy Steel: The young wife of the race promoter who becomes an unlikely ally in the hunt for the holy corpse parts.
  • Funny Valentine: The President secretly using the race for his own ends, the enemy Johnny's journey across America slowly reveals.
