Jellal Fernandes

About Jellal Fernandes

A childhood friend of Erza's from the Tower of Heaven, possessed and twisted into trying to resurrect Zeref. Freed from that control, Jellal carries deep guilt for his crimes and founds the independent guild Crime Sorcière to destroy dark guilds and one day face Zeref himself. His Heavenly Body magic makes him one of the strongest wizards alive, and his bond with Erza, part love, part penance, runs through the whole series.

Appearance

Jellal is a young man with blue hair and a distinctive red tattoo-like marking over and under his right eye, present since childhood. As a villain he wore dark, regal robes; as a fugitive and guild leader he favours a dark coat and cloak suited to a man who works from the shadows. His magic, Heavenly Body, trails golden light, in battle he moves like a falling star, outlined in the glow of his own spells.

Personality

Guilt runs Jellal's life. It decides where he goes, who he allows himself to see, and what he thinks he's owed, which is nothing. The boy Erza remembers from the tower was brave and kind. The thing that wore his face afterwards was built by dark magic working on a child who couldn't fight it off, and Jellal, once he was free, refused to let himself hide behind that. So he does penance as a career. He hunts dark guilds. He keeps his distance from Erza because he loves her and thinks that's exactly why he should. His friends keep pointing out that punishing himself forever is its own kind of selfish. He's working on hearing it.

Background & Story

Jellal was a slave child in the Tower of Heaven alongside Erza, the leader of their little band of friends, it was he who gave Erza the surname Scarlet, for her hair. When their escape failed he was captured and twisted by what he believed was the voice of Zeref, emerging as the tower's cold new master while Erza escaped believing him lost. Years later his plot to fire the Etherion cannon and 'resurrect Zeref' brought Fairy Tail back to the tower; Erza's friends broke the spell on him at terrible cost. Jellal woke with no memory, then chose to remember everything, and founded Crime Sorciere to spend his life destroying dark guilds.

Powers & Abilities

• Heavenly Body Magic: Celestial-powered magic that turns Jellal's body into light-speed motion and rains down star-based attacks, meteor speed, abyssal blasts and the devastating True Heavenly Body: Sema.
• Thought Projection and barriers: Even as a 'captive' he projected a fully independent double, Siegrain, onto the Magic Council for years, a feat of magical skill few noticed until too late.
• Dark magic knowledge: His years under dark influence left him expert in forbidden magic, which Crime Sorciere turns against the dark guilds it hunts.

Key Relationships

• Erza Scarlet: His childhood friend and the love of his life, the person he hurt most and the one whose faith anchors his atonement.
• Wendy Marvell: As the amnesiac 'Mystogan' he once rescued a lost little Wendy, a kindness she remembers long after he forgets it.
• Natsu Dragneel: The enemy who defeated him in the tower and later, without hesitation, trusted him as an ally, a debt Jellal works to repay.
