Quick Answer

About Tetsuro Kuroo

Tetsuro Kuroo is Nekoma's captain, a middle blocker whose taunting smile hides one of the sharpest blocking minds in the series. He taught Kenma volleyball as a child, taught Tsukishima how to block in Tokyo, and plays every match like an argument he intends to win. As captain he is the cats' spine, determined to give Nekoma its dream match, the Battle at the Garbage Dump against Karasuno.

Appearance

Kuroo is tall and lean at 187.7 cm, with messy black hair that falls over one eye and a permanent, scheming grin. He wears Nekoma's number 1 jersey as captain. His blocking stance is low and patient, hands ready, eyes on the setter, he looks like a cat waiting at a mouse hole, which suits Nekoma perfectly. Off court he dresses casually and moves with the same relaxed confidence; the grin rarely leaves, whether he is provoking a rival captain or mentoring a first-year from another team.

Personality

Kuroo is playful, cunning and a born provocateur, he needles opponents, referees and his own teammates with equal delight. But he is also one of the series' great teachers and leaders. He reads people as well as he reads setters, knows exactly what Kenma needs (and does not need) to hear, and gives his time generously even to rivals like Tsukishima, because growing the game matters to him. As captain, his mission is clear: deliver Nekoma to its dream match against Karasuno, the Battle at the Garbage Dump, that their schools' rivalry has promised for years.

Background & Story

Kuroo grew up next door to Kenma and dragged the quiet younger boy into volleyball, patiently building the partnership that now runs Nekoma. As captain he leads a team famous for its floor defence and patience, the cats who never let the ball drop. At the Tokyo training camp he takes Karasuno's Tsukishima under his wing during extra practice, teaching him read blocking and, almost as an afterthought, teaching him to care. Kuroo's own story is about stewardship: of Kenma, of Nekoma's rivalry with Karasuno, and of a style of volleyball built on the idea that a team that never gives up the rally can beat anyone.

Powers & Abilities

  • Read Blocking: Kuroo is a master of watching the setter and committing late, closing on spikers with precisely timed blocks.
  • Provocation: His taunts and gamesmanship rattle opposing spikers and setters into mistakes, a weapon he uses deliberately.
  • Time-Difference Attack: On offence Kuroo uses delayed and staggered timing on his quick attacks to slip past blockers watching for the standard tempo.

Key Relationships

  • Kenma Kozume: His childhood friend and setter, Kuroo introduced him to volleyball and still protects the space Kenma needs to think.
  • Kei Tsukishima: His blocking student from a rival school; Kuroo's lessons at the Tokyo camp changed how Tsukishima plays, and feels.
  • Kotaro Bokuto: His fellow Tokyo captain and sparring partner in the training camp's legendary extra practices.
  • Daichi Sawamura: Karasuno's captain and his opposite number in the cats-versus-crows rivalry, mutual respect, constant teasing.
