About Kenma Kozume
Kenma Kozume is Nekoma's setter, a quiet, game-obsessed second-year who plays volleyball the way he plays RPGs: watching, analysing and striking where the defence is weakest. He has little stamina and less interest in glory, but his brain is Nekoma's real weapon. His official match against Hinata, the friend who made volleyball feel like a game worth finishing, is the emotional core of the Dumpster Battle.
Appearance
Kenma is 169.2 cm with a slight build, shoulder-length hair dyed blond with dark roots showing, and golden, cat-like eyes that give Nekoma's 'cats' nickname a face. He wears Nekoma's number 5 jersey. Off court he is usually hunched over a handheld game, hair falling over his face. On court his movements are minimal, he barely runs, rarely jumps high, and seems half-asleep until the moment his set leaves his hands and Nekoma's whole offence clicks into motion. His stillness is a style: Kenma saves all his energy for thinking.
Personality
Kenma is introverted, blunt and quietly funny. He dislikes standing out, hates getting tired, and says he plays volleyball mostly because Kuroo got him into it and quitting feels like more trouble. But his mind never stops: he reads opponents like game bosses, learning patterns, baiting traps and choosing the play that wins with the least wasted motion. With strangers he is nearly silent; with Hinata, whom he met by chance over a lost phone and a game, he is almost talkative. Kenma's arc is about a boy who insists he does not care, discovering, mid-match, that he is having fun.
Background & Story
Kenma was drawn into volleyball as a child by his neighbour Kuroo, and his talent for observation made him Nekoma's setter despite his weak stamina and distaste for attention. Nekoma's style, patient defence, no wasted movement, everyone covering everyone, is built around his brain. He first meets Hinata while lost on the way to a practice match, and their unlikely friendship becomes one of the series' emotional threads: Hinata's pure hunger to keep playing is the one 'game' Kenma cannot analyse his way out of. When Nekoma and Karasuno finally meet in an official match, the long-promised Battle at the Garbage Dump, Kenma plays the match of his life against his friend.
Powers & Abilities
- Strategic Setting: Kenma treats the court like a strategy game, memorising blockers' and receivers' habits and choosing sets that attack the exact weak point.
- Feint Look: He glances one way and sets another, misleading blockers about where Nekoma's attack will come from.
- Calm Under Pressure: Kenma's tempo never changes, long rallies and hostile crowds do not rush his decisions, which keeps Nekoma's defence-first system working.
Key Relationships
- Tetsuro Kuroo: His childhood friend and captain, the person who pulled him into volleyball and understands his silences.
- Shoyo Hinata: His friend from Karasuno; Hinata's love of the game is the puzzle Kenma most wants to solve, and the opponent he most wants to keep playing.
- Tobio Kageyama: A fellow setter whose athletic, aggressive style is the opposite of Kenma's minimal game.
