About Shoyo Hinata

Shoyo Hinata is Karasuno's shortest player and its most explosive: a first-year middle blocker who can jump higher than players a head taller. Inspired by the 'Little Giant', a small ace from Karasuno's golden days, he wants to prove that height is not everything in volleyball. His speed and total trust in Kageyama's sets create the freak quick attack, and his hunger to stay on the court drives the team's rise back to nationals.

Appearance

Hinata is small and lean at 162.8 cm when he joins Karasuno, with a wild mop of bright orange hair and big brown eyes that make him easy to spot on court. He wears Karasuno's black and orange uniform with the number 10, the same number the Little Giant once wore. Years of cycling over a mountain to school and endless practice have given him wiry, springy legs built for jumping. His face is open and expressive: nervous one moment, grinning with total focus the next, especially in the instant before a spike.

Personality

Hinata is cheerful, stubborn and almost impossible to keep down. He begged his way into matches in middle school with a team of beginners, and losing badly only made him hungrier. He is simple in the best way: he loves volleyball, trusts his setter completely, and treats every rally as a chance to fly one more time. He can be naive about technique and tactics, and frustration hits him hard, but his instinct to compete, and his genuine joy when a teammate succeeds, lift the whole team around him.

Background & Story

Hinata fell in love with volleyball after seeing Karasuno's 'Little Giant', a short ace who dominated taller players, playing at nationals on TV. At Yukigaoka Junior High he had no real team, he practised against walls and with the girls' and mothers' teams, and his one official match ended in a crushing loss to Tobio Kageyama's Kitagawa Daiichi. Swearing to beat Kageyama, he joined Karasuno, only to find his rival there as a teammate. Thrown out of the gym on their first day after a fight, the two earned their places back by winning a practice match together, and their freakishly fast quick attack became the spark of Karasuno's revival. From there Hinata grows from a raw decoy who keeps his eyes closed when he spikes into a player learning to see, think and fight for every ball.

Powers & Abilities

• Freak Quick Attack: Hinata sprints and jumps before the set is even made, trusting Kageyama completely, and spikes the ball at a speed defences barely have time to react to.
• Jumping Power: Despite his height, Hinata's vertical jump lets him reach spike points above the hands of much taller blockers.
• The Greatest Decoy: Because blockers must chase Hinata's speed, his runs pull defenders out of position and open free lanes for Karasuno's other spikers.
• Receiving Growth: Starting from almost no defence, Hinata trains his positioning and first touches until he can keep rallies alive instead of only ending them.

• Tobio Kageyama: His former rival turned setter, their trust powers the freak quick, and each pushes the other to evolve.
