Sasaki

About Sasaki

Sasaki is a worn-out office worker in his late thirties whose only wish is a quiet, comfortable life. Buying a pet Java sparrow changed everything: the bird was a reincarnated sage who taught him magic and world-hopping. Sasaki now trades goods between modern Japan and a fantasy kingdom, runs a restaurant there, and secretly works for a government bureau that handles psychic powers, all while insisting he just wants to relax.

Appearance

Sasaki is an ordinary-looking man in his late thirties, with short dark hair, tired eyes and the slightly rumpled suits of a mid-level trading-company employee. Nothing about him suggests magic, other worlds or government secrets, which is precisely his best disguise. Peeps, a small silver Java sparrow with a star marking, is usually perched on his shoulder or nearby.

Personality

Sasaki is calm, polite and almost impossible to rattle, with the patience of a man who has survived decades of office politics. He prefers negotiation to fighting, profit to glory, and a quiet evening to everything. That mildness hides a sharp commercial mind and a steady nerve: kings, demons and bureau chiefs all discover that the tired salaryman is the most dangerous negotiator in the room.

Background & Story

Sasaki spent nearly forty years in an unremarkable corporate life in Tokyo, living alone and expecting more of the same. Wanting company, he bought a Java sparrow from a pet shop, and the bird spoke. Peeps was Piercarlo, the Sage of the Stars, reincarnated from another world, and he granted Sasaki magic and passage between worlds. Sasaki built a trading business selling modern Japanese goods in the fantasy Herz Kingdom under the name Hermann, and even opened a restaurant there. Back home, using magic to save a stranger exposed him to the Cabinet Office's paranormal bureau, which recruited him as an agent, mistaking his magic for psychic power. He now keeps three lives secret from each other, and would like, someday, to retire from all of them.

Powers & Abilities

• Otherworld magic: Taught by Peeps, Sasaki casts real magic, including icicle attacks, a protective barrier and healing, though on bureau missions he deliberately holds back to pass as an ordinary psychic.
• World travel: Through Peeps' power, Sasaki can travel between modern Japan and the fantasy other world, the foundation of his trading business.

Key Relationships

• Peeps: His pet Java sparrow and secret teacher, the reincarnated Sage of the Stars who gave him magic and world travel.
• Hoshizaki: His young partner at the paranormal bureau, who recruited him and must never learn where his 'psychic' power really comes from.
• Akutsu: His section chief at the bureau, calm, shrewd, and quietly suspicious that Sasaki is hiding something. He is right.
• Viscount Mueller: His chief business partner in the Herz Kingdom, who supplies protection and status in exchange for miraculous Japanese goods.
• Otonari-san: The girl next door whose strange circumstances Sasaki keeps an eye on, with the polite caution her mysteries deserve.
