Minato Namikaze was the Fourth Hokage of the Hidden Leaf, a genius ninja so fast that enemy villages ordered their soldiers to flee on sight. The world knew him as Konoha's Yellow Flash. At home he was Naruto's father, and he died on the night Naruto was born, sealing the Nine-Tailed Fox into his own son and betting the village's future on him.
Appearance
Minato is a tall, fair-skinned man with bright blue eyes and spiky blond hair that falls in long bangs at the sides of his face, which is why people so often remark that Naruto looks like him. As Hokage he wears the green flak jacket of a Leaf jonin under the white Hokage cloak, its hem decorated with red flames and the title of Fourth Hokage down the back. In battle he carries his special three-pronged kunai, marked with the seal of his Flying Thunder God technique, and he moves so fast that most opponents only register a yellow blur.

Minato is calm in a way that steadies everyone around him. He reads a battlefield in seconds, apologises to enemies he is about to beat, and almost never loses his temper. Jiraiya called him a genius seen once in a generation, but the series keeps showing something warmer underneath the talent: a man who blushes around his wife Kushina, who gets flustered naming his own techniques, and who chose his son's future over his own life without a moment of doubt. His faith is his defining act. Everything Naruto becomes starts with a father who believed in him before he could walk.
Background & Story
Minato entered the Leaf Academy dreaming of becoming Hokage and earning the village's respect. He became Jiraiya's student, rescued Kushina from kidnappers as a boy by following the trail of her red hair, and grew into the most feared ninja of the Third Great Ninja War. His Flying Thunder God technique let him appear anywhere his marked kunai had landed, and whole enemy platoons were ordered to run from the yellow flash of his hair. Chosen as Fourth Hokage over Orochimaru, he led the village only briefly. On the night his son was born, a masked man tore the Nine-Tails out of Kushina and turned it on the Leaf. Minato fought the masked man, freed the fox from his control, and then made his choice: he split the Nine-Tails' chakra, sealed half with the Reaper Death Seal at the cost of his soul, and sealed the rest into Naruto, trusting his son to master it one day. He left pieces of himself and Kushina inside the seal, so both of them could meet their boy when he needed them most.
Powers & Abilities
- Flying Thunder God Technique: Minato's signature space-time technique. He marks targets and locations with a seal, often on his special kunai, and can teleport to any mark instantly. It is the source of his Yellow Flash name and the reason armies feared a single man.
- Rasengan: Minato created the Rasengan himself, a sphere of spinning chakra formed in one hand with no hand signs, after watching a Tailed Beast Ball. He never lived to complete it with a chakra nature added. His son would finish that work.
- Reaper Death Seal: The forbidden sealing technique he learned from the Uzumaki clan's traditions, summoning the Shinigami to seal a target at the cost of the user's soul. Minato used it to seal half of the Nine-Tails on the night Naruto was born.
- Sage Mode: Minato is a perfect Sage of Mount Myoboku, able to enter Sage Mode with balanced natural energy and no frog-like features, though he modestly insists he is not very good at it. The results suggest otherwise.
- Summoning Technique: Minato holds a contract with the toads of Mount Myoboku and can summon Gamabunta, the giant chief toad, who helped him pin down the Nine-Tails during its attack on the village.
