Shikamaru Nara
From Naruto
Shikamaru is a supporting character in Naruto, the Nara clan's shadow strategist on Team 10. The laziest genius in the Leaf, he can plan a battle two hundred moves ahead and would still rather be watching clouds. He is voiced by Showtaro Morikubo in Japanese and Tom Gibis in English.
About Shikamaru Nara
Shikamaru is the Hidden Leaf's laziest genius, a ninja who would rather watch clouds than fight. Behind that attitude sits one of the sharpest minds in the village, able to plan many moves ahead in battle. He fights using shadow techniques passed down in the Nara clan, and his calm thinking makes him a natural leader of his friends.
Appearance
Shikamaru is a lean young man with black hair tied in a spiky ponytail that fans compare to a pineapple, narrow, half-lidded eyes and a permanently unbothered expression. He wears the standard Leaf uniform with his clan's casual touches, small hoop earrings given by his teacher Asuma, and his headband on his arm. Around him, shadows seem to lean closer than they should, the Nara clan's medium and weapon.
Personality
Shikamaru is brilliant and bone-lazy: his catchphrase for life itself is 'what a drag'. With an IQ measured over 200, he treats every fight as a shogi problem and prefers solutions where his side barely has to move. Beneath the slouch sits the Leaf's most dependable young leader, the first of his class promoted to chunin, purely for judgement shown in a match he forfeited. Loss teaches him what talent never did: after his teacher's death, the laziest boy in the village becomes the man everyone looks to when the plan falls apart.
Background & Story
Shikamaru was born into the Nara clan, keepers of the Leaf's shadow techniques and a forest of sacred deer, to a sharp mother and a smarter father he pretended not to respect. At the academy he napped through everything alongside his best friend Choji, the one boy who never mocked him. The Chunin Exams exposed him: Shikamaru out-thought a stronger opponent so completely that he was promoted despite surrendering. War and loss did the rest, his teacher Asuma died on a mission Shikamaru planned, and the boy who called everything a drag personally hunted the immortal killer down, then grew into the Hokage's right hand and the alliance's chief strategist.
Powers & Abilities
- Shadow Possession Jutsu: Shikamaru stretches his shadow along the ground; anyone whose shadow it touches is forced to mirror his movements exactly.
- Shadow Strangle and Shadow Stitching: His shadows grow teeth, strangling hands, piercing needles and threads that sew enemies to the ground or lift them helpless.
- Strategic genius: Shikamaru's true weapon: he reads an enemy's abilities from moments of combat and builds multi-stage traps, using his teammates like shogi pieces, including himself as bait.
- Shogi-trained leadership: Asuma's shogi lessons taught him the value of every 'piece', the philosophy that later made him the allied forces' brain in the world war.
Key Relationships
- Choji Akimichi: His best friend since childhood, the kind boy Shikamaru defended when no one else would sit with him; their trust is absolute.
- Ino Yamanaka: His Team 10 teammate; the Ino-Shika-Cho trio their fathers began is the Leaf's most famous formation.
- Asuma Sarutobi: His teacher, whose death Shikamaru avenged and whose unborn child he swore to protect, the promise that made him grow up.
- Temari: The Sand kunoichi who keeps beating, rescuing and out-arguing him, their bickering became the series' most understated romance.
- Naruto Uzumaki: His friend and future Hokage, Shikamaru decided early that Naruto was worth standing beside, and built his career on it.
