Rock Lee is an energetic Hidden Leaf ninja who cannot use ninjutsu or genjutsu at all. Instead, he masters taijutsu, pure hand-to-hand fighting, through relentless daily training. With his bowl-cut hair, thick eyebrows and endless enthusiasm, Lee proves again and again that hard work can challenge natural genius, inspired by his beloved teacher, Might Guy.

Appearance

Lee is a wiry, earnest young man with shiny black bowl-cut hair, round eyes and famously thick eyebrows, 'Bushy Brow' to Naruto. He wears a green jumpsuit under his Leaf uniform, orange leg warmers hiding heavy training weights, and bandages wrapped around his hands and forearms from endless practice. Everything about him looks slightly old-fashioned, like his beloved teacher, because he dresses to match him on purpose.

Personality

Lee is polite, formal, bursting with energy and utterly incapable of cynicism. Unable to do what every other ninja does by nature, he chose the hardest road in the world and runs it smiling: thousands of daily push-ups, self-imposed punishments for failure, and a faith in hard work that borders on religion. His rivalry with Neji and his devotion to Guy give him structure; his heart gives him the rest. Lee's battles against geniuses are the series' purest statement of its theme, that effort, chosen daily, is its own kind of genius.

Background & Story

Rock Lee entered the academy as a boy with no talent for ninjutsu or genjutsu, in a ninja village, nearly no future at all. The taijutsu master Might Guy saw himself in the mocked, hard-working kid and took him on: Lee trained until his hands bled, wore weights that cratered the floor when dropped, and mastered techniques Guy forbade him to use except to protect what matters. In the Chunin Exams, Lee's fight against Gaara, a 'failure' pushing a monster to the edge with speed and the forbidden Eight Gates, became legend, even though it left his body crushed and doctors saying he would never fight again. Lee chose a surgery that could kill him rather than live without his way of the ninja.

• Taijutsu mastery: Lee's hand-to-hand skill is elite: blinding speed, the Leaf's whirlwind kicks, and strikes that trouble opponents far above his official rank.
• The Eight Gates: By opening the body's chakra limiters one by one, Lee multiplies his speed and power enormously, at the cost of tearing his own body apart.
• Drunken Fist: After accidentally drinking sake, Lee becomes an unpredictable, swaying master whose movements no one can read, including Lee.
• Hidden weights: Lee trains constantly wearing massive leg weights; removing them multiplies his speed in an instant, to the shock of everyone watching.
