Migi
From Parasyte: The Maxim
Migi is a main character in Parasyte: The Maxim, the alien parasite living in Shinichi Izumi's right hand, named for the Japanese word for 'right'. Logical, curious and devoted to its own survival above all else, it slowly becomes something like a partner to its host. Migi is voiced by Aya Hirano in Japanese and Brittney Karbowski in English.
About Migi
Migi is the parasite living in Shinichi's right hand, a thinking, shape-shifting creature with eyes and mouths on what used to be fingers. It cares only about its own survival, studies humans like a science project and finds emotions baffling. Yet as Migi and Shinichi depend on each other to live, this utterly alien mind slowly becomes something like a partner.
Appearance
Migi has no fixed shape, but its usual form is Shinichi's right hand reshaped into something unmistakably alien: fingers that bend and stretch like rubber, a mouth full of teeth opening across the palm, lips, and one or more eyes on stalks that rise from the fingers to look around. It can sprout small wings, extra limbs or a face wherever it needs one. When it sleeps, the hand goes limp and ordinary. The effect is both comic and horrifying, a cartoon creature attached to a real boy, capable at any moment of becoming a weapon.
Personality
Migi thinks like a scientist and a survivor, in that order. It feels no guilt, no loyalty and no curiosity about anything that does not affect its survival, at first. It studies human language, biology and behaviour the way a student crams for an exam, asks disarmingly direct questions about human customs, and delivers brutal judgements in a cheerful, reasonable tone. Living inside Shinichi changes it in ways it finds genuinely confusing: it begins, against all its instincts, to account for another creature's feelings. Migi would be the first to call that a malfunction.
Background & Story
Migi arrived on Earth as one of countless tiny parasites with a single instinct: reach a human brain and take the body. Its attempt on the sleeping Shinichi failed, blocked from his ear, trapped in his arm by a tourniquet of earphone cord, and it matured in his right hand instead, the first parasite known to share a body with a conscious human host. Unable to survive without Shinichi's body and brain-fed blood supply, Migi negotiated the strangest alliance in the series: it would protect the boy, and the boy would keep its secret. From Shinichi's desk, Migi studies humanity, reading, observing, asking questions, while its own kind mark the pair for death as an abomination.
Powers & Abilities
- Shape-Shifting Body: Migi can reshape its hand-form freely, stretching fingers, growing eyes and mouths, sprouting wings, remaking its body for whatever the moment needs.

- Parasite Sensing: Migi can detect the distinctive signals of other parasites at a distance, warning Shinichi of danger long before a threat shows its face.
- Rapid Learning: Migi absorbs human language, reading and knowledge at extraordinary speed, teaching itself from books and the internet to understand the species it lives among.
Key Relationships
- Shinichi Izumi: Its host, its home and its greatest problem, the human whose body Migi needs to live, and whose feelings it slowly, reluctantly starts to consider.
- Ryoko Tamiya: The parasite-scholar who takes a scientific interest in the pair, Migi respects her intelligence precisely because it makes her dangerous.
- Satomi Murano: Shinichi's girlfriend, whom Migi regards as a puzzle and occasionally a threat to their secret, human attachment is the thing it understands least.
Quick Answers
What does 'Migi' mean?
Migi is the Japanese word for 'right'. Shinichi names the parasite after the right hand it lives in.
Is Migi a boy or a girl?
Neither, parasites have no sex. Migi is simply Migi, a creature with its own voice and personality living in Shinichi's right hand.
Can Migi leave Shinichi's body?
No. Migi depends on Shinichi's body for nourishment and survival, and Shinichi's hand is Migi. If they were separated, both would be in serious danger, which is why they must cooperate.
Who voices Migi?
Migi is voiced by Aya Hirano in Japanese and by Brittney Karbowski in the English dub.
