He fights as Kaiju No. 8 while hiding what he has become from his childhood friend Mina Ashiro, now a star captain. He is voiced by Masaya Fukunishi in Japanese and Nazeeh Tarsha in English.
About Kafka Hibino
Kafka Hibino is a 32 year old kaiju cleanup worker who spent years watching other people fight the monsters he dreamed of facing. After a small kaiju forces its way into his body, he gains the power to transform into a humanoid kaiju and finally joins the Defense Force. Now he fights to protect people while hiding the one secret that could end it all.
Appearance
In his human form Kafka is a stocky, broad shouldered man with short spiky black hair, thick eyebrows and a small patch of stubble on his chin. Years of cleanup work have left him more solid than athletic, and he usually wears the dark Defense Force combat suit with grey shoulder armour and a rifle in hand. When he transforms, his body becomes a muscular grey blue humanoid kaiju with a skull like face, rows of sharp teeth and a glowing core in his chest. The contrast is the whole point of him: an ordinary, slightly worn down worker on the outside, and something the Defense Force would normally shoot on sight underneath.
Personality
Kafka is warm, loud and stubbornly cheerful, the kind of person who encourages everyone around him and then quietly blames himself when things go wrong. He never really gave up on the Defense Force, even after years of failed attempts and a job cleaning up after its victories. That persistence is his real strength. He is also selfless to a fault. Kafka will throw himself between a monster and a stranger without thinking, and he would rather risk his secret, and his life, than let someone else get hurt. Around Mina he is still the kid who made a promise he has not kept yet, and that promise drives almost everything he does.
Background & Story
Kafka grew up with Mina Ashiro, and the two of them dreamed of joining the Defense Force together. Mina made it, rising fast to become a star captain. Kafka did not. He failed to get in, again and again, and ended up working for a cleanup company, cutting up dead kaiju after the real fighters had moved on. At 32, his chance looked gone for good. Then a small flying kaiju forced its way into his body, and Kafka gained the power to transform into a humanoid kaiju. With encouragement from his younger coworker Reno Ichikawa, he tried for the Defense Force one last time and got in. Serving with Reno and the prodigy Kikoru Shinomiya, Kafka finally fights on the front line, as an officer, and as the creature the force calls Kaiju No. 8, a secret he has to guard every single day.
Powers & Abilities
- Kaiju transformation: Kafka can transform into a humanoid kaiju, the being the Defense Force designates Kaiju No. 8. In this form his strength, speed and toughness rise far beyond any human's, and he can go toe to toe with giant monsters.
- Raw kaiju strength: Even big kaiju struggle with Kafka's transformed power. His punches can shatter monster bodies and expose their cores, which is how kaiju are killed.
- Regeneration: Kafka's kaiju body heals fast. Injuries that would end a normal officer's career close up in his transformed form, which helps him keep fighting, and helps him hide how badly he has been hurt.
- Defense Force training: Underneath the monster power, Kafka is a trained Defense Force officer in a powered combat suit. His years on cleanup crews also taught him kaiju anatomy from the inside, where the cores sit and how the bodies break down.
Key Relationships
- Mina Ashiro: His childhood friend, and the promise at the centre of his life. Mina became the star captain Kafka could not keep up with, and he joined the Defense Force to stand beside her. She is also the person he most fears finding out what he has become.
- Reno Ichikawa: His younger coworker from the cleanup crews, who pushed Kafka to try for the Defense Force one last time and enlisted alongside him. Reno is one of the first people to learn Kafka's secret, and he covers for him.
- Kikoru Shinomiya: His squadmate in the Third Division, a prodigy who started out looking down on the older recruit. Kafka's recklessness in battle slowly earns her respect, and the two become trusted comrades.
- Gen Narumi: The First Division captain Kafka is brought before in Season 2. Narumi has no use for a kaiju in uniform at first, so Kafka has to face his own power head on and prove he is worth keeping on the force.
