Gen Narumi
From Kaiju No. 8
Gen Narumi is the captain of the First Division in Kaiju No. 8 and the Defense Force's strongest active combatant. He moves to the centre of the story in Season 2, when the detained Kafka Hibino is brought before him, and he stars in the spin-off short anime Narumi's Week at Work. He is voiced by Koki Uchiyama in Japanese and Aaron Dismuke in English.
About Gen Narumi
Gen Narumi is the captain of the Defense Force's First Division and its strongest active combatant. Off the battlefield he is lazy, rude and glued to his games, which makes his record in combat even harder to believe. He is popular enough to headline his own spin-off short anime, Narumi's Week at Work, due in Fall 2026.
Appearance
Narumi is a lean young man with messy two tone hair, dark underneath and pale pinkish on top, with small horn like markings on his forehead and heavy lidded reddish eyes that make him look half asleep. He wears the standard dark Defense Force combat suit, often with one hand scratching his head like he has just been woken up and would like to go back to bed. The slouch is misleading. The moment a fight starts, his whole posture changes, and the lazy officer becomes the sharpest weapon the Defense Force has.
Personality
Narumi is arrogant, blunt and openly lazy about anything that is not fighting. He skips meetings, dodges paperwork and spends his free time on games and social media, and he makes no effort to hide any of it. The thing is, nobody can really argue with him, because in combat he is simply the best the Defense Force has. Narumi knows it, too. He demands results, hates weakness and has little patience for sentiment. But his standards apply to himself first, and the officers under him follow him because, when the worst kaiju appear, Narumi is the one who walks towards them.
Background & Story
Narumi rose to captain of the First Division, the Defense Force's strongest unit, and built a reputation as its strongest active anti-kaiju combatant. When Kafka Hibino is detained after his kaiju form is exposed, Kafka is brought before Narumi, who sees no reason to keep a monster in the ranks. Kafka has to prove, in front of the strongest man in the force, that his power can be trusted. Narumi's everyday life away from battle gets its own spotlight in Narumi's Week at Work, a spin-off short anime due in Fall 2026, built around the gap between the strongest captain and his very ordinary weekdays.
Powers & Abilities
- Strongest active combatant: Narumi is regarded as the Defense Force's strongest active anti-kaiju fighter. His combat record sits above every other serving officer, which is why the First Division is treated as the force's ultimate answer to a major kaiju attack.
- Numbered kaiju weapon: Like the force's top officers, Narumi fights with a weapon made from a numbered kaiju, matched to his sharp eyesight and reactions. It lets him read a fight at speed and strike with precision few officers can follow.
- First Division command: Narumi leads the First Division in the field, directing the strongest unit in the Defense Force during the biggest battles. His calls carry weight because everyone knows he will be at the front of whatever he orders.
Key Relationships
- Kafka Hibino: The kaiju officer brought before him in Season 2. Narumi starts out with no faith in Kafka at all, and Kafka has to earn his place in front of the one man whose judgement the whole force trusts.
- Mina Ashiro: A fellow captain and one of the few officers whose record invites comparison with his. The two represent the Defense Force at its very strongest.
- Soshiro Hoshina: Another senior officer of the Defense Force. Both men are among the force's most trusted fighters when a major kaiju threat appears.
