About Beru

Beru is a shadow soldier born from the Ant King, the terrifying S-rank beast that slaughtered elite hunters on Jeju Island before Jinwoo defeated it. Raised as a shadow, Beru keeps the Ant King's speed, claws and hunger for battle, with an intense devotion to his king. He can speak, think and enjoy human dramas, making him as oddly charming as he is deadly.

Appearance

Beru is a tall, insectoid shadow soldier: a sleek black humanoid ant with a segmented exoskeleton, long clawed arms, jagged wings, glowing violet eyes and antennae, wreathed in the purple-black smoke that marks all of Jinwoo's shadows. Even among the shadow army he looks wrong in the best way, less a soldier than a predator wearing a soldier's posture, head tilting with bird-like curiosity at human things. He can shrink his presence to perch and watch television dramas, then unfold into the fastest killer on any battlefield. The design keeps the Ant King's menace and adds something the original never had: personality, beaming out of a monster's face.

Personality

Beru is a study in contrasts: the Ant King was a silent apex predator; Beru the shadow is talkative, theatrical and utterly devoted. Raised shadows keep fragments of who they were, and Beru's fragments assembled into a loyal knight with a king-worship complex and a surprising inner life, he studies human history, devours television dramas, and speaks in an oddly formal, archaic style he learned from them. In battle the charm vanishes: Beru is sadistic, ecstatic in combat and proud to the point of arrogance, measuring himself against Jinwoo's other elites. His devotion, though, is absolute and simple, Jinwoo gave him purpose beyond hunger, and Beru would burn the world down on one order, then ask if his king was pleased.

Background & Story

The Ant King was born on Jeju Island to lead the ant colony's conquest of the mainland, an S-rank catastrophe that killed elite hunters from Korea and Japan alike, including the healer Min Byung-Gyu, whose skills it stole by eating him. When Jinwoo arrived at Jeju's final battle, he killed the Ant King after one of the hardest fights of his life, and then raised it. Shadow extraction on a creature that strong produced something rare: a Marshal-grade shadow who could speak, think and grow. Named Beru, the former terror of Jeju became Jinwoo's strongest soldier and his most unlikely source of comedy, a monster-king reborn as a loyal retainer with a television habit.
