Ainz Ooal Gown
From Overlord
Ainz Ooal Gown is the main character of Overlord. He used to be the player Momonga, an ordinary salaryman, until he got trapped in his skeletal game avatar when YGGDRASIL shut down. Now he rules the Great Tomb of Nazarick. He performs the part of an all-knowing overlord while improvising inside. He is voiced by Satoshi Hino in Japanese and Chris Guerrero in English.
About Ainz Ooal Gown
Ainz Ooal Gown, once the player Momonga, is the undead sorcerer-king who rules the Great Tomb of Nazarick. Trapped in his skeletal game avatar when YGGDRASIL shut down, he now performs the part of an all-knowing overlord while improvising desperately inside. His guardians worship him, kingdoms fear him, and his loneliness for his lost guildmates drives everything he does.
Appearance
Ainz is a towering skeleton in an elaborate black and purple academic robe trimmed with gold, with glowing red eyes in empty sockets, exposed bone hands set with powerful rings, and an orb embedded in his ribcage. Everything about him radiates final-boss menace, which is the point. As the adventurer Momon he instead wears jet-black full plate armour with a red cape and twin greatswords, hiding the undead ruler behind the kingdom's most celebrated hero.
Personality
Ainz is cautious, pragmatic and, beneath the performance, a lonely, ordinary man. His undead body suppresses strong emotion, which helps him play the cold, calculating Sorcerer King his guardians worship, but inside he improvises constantly, bluffs shamelessly and panics quietly. What truly drives him is not conquest: it is the memory of his guildmates, the friends who built Nazarick with him and never came back. Every decision he makes is, at heart, an attempt to protect their legacy and their 'children', the NPCs.
Background & Story
Ainz began as Suzuki Satoru, a salaryman in a bleak future Japan whose whole life outside work was the game YGGDRASIL, where he led the guild Ainz Ooal Gown as the undead overlord Momonga. On the game's final night he stayed logged in until shutdown, and woke in a world that resembled the game made real, still in his avatar's body, with Nazarick's NPCs alive and loyal. Taking his guild's name as his own, Ainz set out to learn the New World's rules, protect the tomb, and search for any other players, above all, hoping somewhere out there, his old friends might be waiting.
Powers & Abilities
- High-tier and Super-Tier magic: Ainz knows over 700 spells, up to the game-breaking Super-Tier level that can slaughter armies and reshape battlefields.
- Undead racial traits: His skeleton body needs no food, sleep or breath, resists poison and mind effects, and automatically calms his emotions when they spike.
- Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown: The guild weapon, a serpent-coiled staff set with divine gems, boosts his magic and can summon primal elementals.
- Momon, the Dark Hero: Disguised in black armour, Ainz fights as a peerless warrior, using magic to fake a swordsman's strength and build Nazarick a heroic legend.
- The Goal of All Life is Death: His rarest Eclipse-class skill, which strengthens instant-death magic so completely that even resistances and immunities fail against it.
Key Relationships
- Albedo: The Overseer of the Guardians, his most capable deputy, and, thanks to a setting he edited on a whim, hopelessly in love with him.
- Demiurge: Nazarick's strategist, who reads world-conquering genius into Ainz's every improvisation.
- Shalltear Bloodfallen: The vampire guardian whose duel with Ainz becomes the first real fight he ever faces in the New World.
- Sebas Tian: The head butler, created by Ainz's most heroic guildmate, whose kindness Ainz respects even when it complicates his plans.
