Sword Art Online is A-1 Pictures' landmark VR anime, adapted from Reki Kawahara's light novels: 96 TV episodes across four major arcs (2012–2020) plus films. It begins with 10,000 players trapped in a VR death game, where dying in-game means dying for real. Solo swordsman Kirito and rapier master Asuna anchor a story that grows from survival adventure into questions about virtual lives and souls.
About Sword Art Online
In 2022, the virtual-reality game Sword Art Online traps 10,000 players inside: logging out is impossible, and dying in the game means dying in real life. Solo player Kirito fights to clear all 100 floors and free everyone. Animated by A-1 Pictures from Reki Kawahara's light novels, Sword Art Online became the defining VR anime of its era, running across four major TV arcs from 2012 to 2020, plus the hit film Ordinal Scale and the retelling films of the Progressive series. The concept is instantly gripping, a beautiful game world with real death, where guilds, friendships, romance and betrayal all carry mortal weight. Kirito and Asuna, one of anime's most famous couples, stand at its centre: two of the game's strongest players who find love inside a death trap. Later arcs widen the idea beyond one game: a flying world in ALfheim, a shooter in Gun Gale Online, and finally Underworld, a virtual civilisation where artificial minds raise the hardest question of all, what makes a soul real? Add Yuki Kajiura's sweeping score and some landmark action scenes, and you have a franchise that shaped a whole genre of trapped-in-a-game stories.
Sword Art Online is a TV anime from 2012, first released in Summer 2012. It belongs to the Action and Adventure and Romance genres and is listed as a completed series. The summary above is written by the AnimeYug team in our own words.

Story & Plot
On 6 November 2022, the world's first full-dive VR game, Sword Art Online, launches, and its creator, Akihiko Kayaba, removes the logout button. Ten thousand players are trapped on Aincrad, a floating castle of 100 floors. If their health bar empties, the NerveGear headset will kill their real body; the only escape is to clear the final floor. Kirito, a beta tester who plays alone, is determined to survive, until he meets Asuna, the lightning-fast vice-commander of the Knights of the Blood, and discovers that even inside a death game, life can be worth living.
Clearing Aincrad is only the beginning. Kirito dives into the fairy world of ALfheim to rescue Asuna, hunts a killer sniper in the shooter Gun Gale Online alongside Sinon, and shares one unforgettable week with Yuuki, the strongest duellist he ever met. Then comes Project Alicization: Kirito wakes in Underworld, a virtual world of people who do not know they are artificial, and befriends a boy named Eugeo and a knight named Alice. When war reaches Underworld, the fight is no longer about logging out. It is about whether digital souls deserve a world of their own.
