Summer 2012 Anime

In 2022, the virtual-reality game Sword Art Online traps 10,000 players inside: logging out is impossible, and dying in the game means dying in real life. Solo player Kirito fights to clear all 100 floors and free everyone. Animated by A-1 Pictures from Reki Kawahara's light novels, Sword Art Online became the defining VR anime of its era, running across four major TV arcs from 2012 to 2020, plus the hit film Ordinal Scale and the retelling films of the Progressive series. The concept is instantly gripping, a beautiful game world with real death, where guilds, friendships, romance and betrayal all carry mortal weight. Kirito and Asuna, one of anime's most famous couples, stand at its centre: two of the game's strongest players who find love inside a death trap. Later arcs widen the idea beyond one game: a flying world in ALfheim, a shooter in Gun Gale Online, and finally Underworld, a virtual civilisation where artificial minds raise the hardest question of all, what makes a soul real? Add Yuki Kajiura's sweeping score and some landmark action scenes, and you have a franchise that shaped a whole genre of trapped-in-a-game stories.
