Mashle Live-Action Movie: Mackenyu Cast as Mash, Teaser Out, Release Date Set
The short answer first: the live-action Mashle: Magic and Muscles movie opens in Japanese cinemas on 19 March 2027. Mackenyu plays Mash Burnedead, Yuichi Fukuda directs, and a teaser video is already out. For now it is Japan only.
The short answer: out 19 March 2027 in Japan, Mackenyu plays Mash
The casting reveal and the date landed together, which is why this story moved so fast. Mackenyu is a familiar face to anime fans already. He played Roronoa Zoro in Netflix's live-action One Piece, so this is his second big manga role, and it's another physically demanding one.
Let's be clear about the release, though. 19 March 2027 is the Japanese cinema date. No overseas date or distributor has been confirmed, and we'll say more on that below.
The teaser: what it actually shows
The teaser keeps things short and plays to the joke at the heart of the series. It shows Mackenyu as Mash receiving the fake facial mark, the one used to hide the fact that he can't use magic at all. There's also a scene of him bench pressing, because of course there is.
The film was first announced on 3 November with what was called a super teaser visual. It showed Mash from behind, holding a dumbbell instead of a wand, with the tagline 'It's finally time for a movie adaptation, Mash'. A teaser visual and the teaser video have followed since.
Who is making it: director, producers, distributor
- Director: Yuichi Fukuda
- Production oversight: Warner Bros. Pictures and Fuji Television
- Production: CREDEUS
- Distributor in Japan: Toho
- Mash Burnedead: Mackenyu
That's a heavyweight lineup for a comedy action film, and Toho handling the Japanese release puts it in major cinemas from day one.
Mackenyu as Mash: why the casting fits
Mash is a deadpan character. The humour comes from how flatly he reacts while doing something absurd with raw strength. Mackenyu has already shown he can play that kind of role straight, and the bench press scene in the teaser suggests the film knows exactly what fans want to see first.
His Zoro role helps in another way too. A lot of One Piece live-action viewers who have never read Mashle will now hear about this film, and that crossover attention is real.
What is still unknown: rest of the cast, international release
Two gaps, stated plainly. First, no other cast member has been announced. Mackenyu is the only confirmed name so far. Second, there is no international release plan yet. No overseas date, no overseas distributor, nothing confirmed for India either.
Both of those will change at some point, and we'll update this article when they do. Until then, treat any cast list or international date you see elsewhere as unconfirmed.
While you wait: Mashle Season 3 lands January 2027
The anime is not making you wait until March. Mashle Season 3 starts on Crunchyroll in January 2027, a couple of months before the film. Our Mashle page has the full series details if you want to catch up first.
