Xiaolan
Xiaolan is a young servant girl in The Apothecary Diaries and one of Maomao's first friends in the rear palace, bright, talkative and full of dreams. She is voiced by Misaki Kuno in Japanese and Bree Han in English.
About Xiaolan
Xiaolan is a servant girl in the rear palace and one of Maomao's first real friends there. Bright, talkative and endlessly curious about court gossip, she dreams of a better life beyond palace service and works cheerfully toward it. Her chatter is more useful than it looks: through Xiaolan, news and rumour from every corner of the palace find their way to Maomao's ears.
Appearance
Xiaolan is a small, round-faced girl with her hair in twin buns and an expression that is almost always mid-chatter. She wears a servant's plain clothes and carries herself with a bounce that palace discipline has never managed to flatten. Next to Maomao's flat stare, Xiaolan is all sunshine and motion.
Personality
Xiaolan is cheerful, gossipy and ambitious in the most practical way: she wants a good position, a better life, and she works toward both with a smile. Her endless curiosity about court rumours makes her an accidental intelligence network, everything the palace whispers eventually passes through Xiaolan. She is kind without calculation, and her friendship asks nothing of Maomao except company.
Background & Story
Xiaolan entered palace service as a young girl from an ordinary background and befriended Maomao soon after Maomao arrived in the rear palace. While Maomao solves mysteries, Xiaolan pursues her own storyline of self-improvement, studying, making connections, and planning a future beyond her service term. Her chatter keeps Maomao connected to the everyday palace, and her dreams give the story one of its warmest measures of what ordinary girls hope for inside the walls.
Key Relationships
- Maomao: Her best friend in the palace, Xiaolan supplies the gossip, the warmth and the reminders of ordinary life that Maomao needs.
