Desir Herrman
Desir Herrman is the main character of A Returner's Magic Should Be Special. He was one of the last six mages alive at the end of the world, and instead of dying he woke up thirteen years in the past, back at his first day at Hebrion Academy. His own raw magic is weak, but he has a decade of war in his head. He is voiced by Takuma Terashima in Japanese and Austin Tindle in English.
About Desir Herrman
Desir Herrman was one of the last six mages alive at the end of the world, and instead of dying with it, he woke up thirteen years in the past, on his first day at Hebrion Academy. His own magic is nothing special, but he carries a decade of war in his head. His plan: rebuild his party, make them stronger than fate, and change the ending.
Appearance
Desir is a tall, fair-skinned teenager with messy black hair that never looks properly brushed and calm, tired eyes that belong on someone much older. He wears the Hebrion Academy uniform like everyone else, and nothing about him screams 'saved the world once'. He is not built like a warrior. What gives him away is how still he stays in a crisis, and how quickly his eyes move when a spell goes off near him. He watches magic the way other people watch a chess board.
Personality
Desir is patient, dry and quietly stubborn. Ten years of losing friends in the Shadow Labyrinth burned the arrogance out of him, so he treats every student, commoner or noble, as someone who might matter later. Because they did. He plans three moves ahead, lies when the truth would get people killed, and carries a survivor's guilt he almost never talks about. There's warmth under it, though. Give him a hopeless student and a free afternoon and he is genuinely happy, because fixing what went wrong last time is the whole point of being back.
Background & Story
Desir was a nobody in his first life: a commoner mage with a low circle who got into Hebrion Academy and was written off by its noble students. Then the Shadow Worlds swallowed the world, and the war inside the Shadow Labyrinth dragged on for ten years. Desir survived it. He was one of the final six who killed the dragon of destruction, and the dying dragon's heart exploded and took what was left of humanity with it. He woke up thirteen years earlier, at the academy's entrance exam, with every memory intact. This time he knows which classmates died, which ones were wasted by a snobbish school system, and roughly when the end starts. His plan is simple to say and hard to do: rebuild his party early, train them properly this time, and change the ending.
Powers & Abilities
- Spell Analysis and Dismantling: Desir's real gift is reading a spell's formula as it is cast and unpicking it, so he can break apart magic far stronger than his own.
- Future Knowledge: He remembers thirteen years that have not happened yet: Shadow World patterns, enemy tactics, and which people will matter when the war comes.
- Battlefield Tactics: A decade of war made him a commander first and a duellist second. He positions his party, calls targets and spots the weak point in a fight before it opens up.
- Training Eye: He spots wasted talent fast and knows exactly which drill, weapon or bad habit is holding a student back, because last time he watched most of them die undertrained.
Key Relationships
- Romantica Eru: The first party member he recruits, and the most personal. In his first life she died in the war, so keeping her alive this time is not strategy. It's a promise.
- Pram Schnaizer: The young swordsman Desir takes under his wing early, determined that the cheerful kid who died in the Labyrinth gets to grow up this time.
- Azest Kingscrown: The academy's untouchable top student. She starts as the rival he has to get past and becomes the ally his party needs most.
- Zod Exarion: The master of the Magic Tower, a living legend. Zod notices that this commoner student's tactics feel like they were learned in a war nobody else remembers.
