Vinland Saga is a historical Viking anime about Thorfinn, a boy who joins the mercenary band that killed his father to earn a chance at revenge, then grows into a man searching for a peaceful land across the sea. It has 48 episodes across two completed seasons, Season 1 by WIT Studio (2019) and Season 2 by MAPPA (2023), adapting Makoto Yukimura's manga, which finished in 2025.
About Vinland Saga
Thorfinn grows up in Iceland dreaming of Vinland, a warm land across the sea with no war and no slaves. When his father Thors is killed by the mercenary Askeladd, the boy joins the very band he hates, sharpening his knives and waiting for the duel that will let him avenge his father. Season 1 (WIT Studio, 2019) follows that revenge quest through the Danish invasion of England, where Thorfinn crosses paths with Prince Canute and the giant warrior Thorkell. Season 2 (MAPPA, 2023) is a complete change of pace: Thorfinn, now an enslaved farmhand with nothing left to fight for, slowly rebuilds his life alongside fellow slave Einar and swears off violence for good. Across 48 episodes, Vinland Saga grows from a brutal revenge story into one of anime's most respected tales about escaping the cycle of hatred, adapted from Makoto Yukimura's award-winning manga, which ran from 2005 to 2025.
Vinland Saga is a TV anime from 2019, first released in Summer 2019. It belongs to the Action and Adventure and Drama genres and is listed as a completed series. The summary above is written by the AnimeYug team in our own words.

Story & Plot
In 1002 AD, young Thorfinn sneaks aboard his father Thors' ship and watches helplessly as the mercenary Askeladd murders him. Swearing revenge, Thorfinn spends the next decade inside Askeladd's own warband, fighting through the Danish conquest of England while waiting for an honourable duel. Along the way he is caught between the timid Prince Canute, who hardens into a king with a ruthless dream of paradise on Earth, and Thorkell the Tall, a giant who treats war as pure joy. The boy who lived only for vengeance slowly realises how empty that path is.
After Askeladd's death, Thorfinn is sold into slavery on Ketil's farm in Denmark. There he meets Einar, an English farmer who also lost everything, and through back-breaking work, new friendships and the gentle Arnheid, Thorfinn confronts the weight of everyone he has killed. He emerges with a radical vow (to build a land with no war and no slaves, and never raise a weapon again) just as Canute's army threatens the farm and everyone on it.

Who Is It For?
Vinland Saga is rated TV-MA and is made for adults: battles are bloody and realistic, and the story deals with slavery, murder and the trauma of war. Season 2 is far quieter but emotionally heavy. It suits viewers who enjoy serious historical drama and slow, meaningful character change rather than non-stop action.
