The anime makes a bit of history before it even starts: it is the first ever joint project of SUNRISE and SHAFT, two of Japan's best known studios, working together under the banner SUNRISE x SHAFT. Atsushi Yukawa directs, with series composition by Jin Tanaka, character design by Robert Sato and music by Tatsuya Kato. Koki Uchiyama leads the Japanese cast as Toshiro Kamiya, alongside Minako Kotobuki as Yomiko Horai, Aya Endo as Saeko Kanaeno, Junya Enoki as Akira Yatsuka and Kiyomitsu Mizuuchi as Jin Hiragishi. Story & Plot
The sky is gone. Thick clouds cover the world, the sunlight no longer reaches the ground, and with the plants dying off, oxygen is running out. Humanity is slowly suffocating.
The answer people found is transfloration. It is a process that turns a person who is close to death into a plant, so their body goes on producing oxygen for everyone else. It keeps the world breathing, at a price only the desperate are willing to pay.
Toshiro Kamiya is desperate. He is young, he is poor, and his mother is ill, and her medicine costs money he does not have. So he chooses transfloration for himself. But something unexpected comes with the change: Kamiya can hear the plants. In a world where people turn into greenery to survive, that makes him the one person who can hear what they have to say.
