Bocchi the Rock! Prequel Movie "Hoshi no Ashiato" Announced for 2027
A brand-new Bocchi the Rock! movie is on the way. Announced on 1 November 2026 through the series' official channels, the film is titled "Hoshi no Ashiato" and will premiere in Japanese cinemas in 2027. A teaser visual and an announcement trailer were released with the news. The visual shows the two sisters in the back of a car, with the story teased as one of a "sisters' dream" that began with a "separation".
What is the new Bocchi the Rock! movie about?
This is not a story about Bocchi and Kessoku Band. "Hoshi no Ashiato" is a prequel that goes back in time to follow Seika and Nijika Ijichi when they were younger, roughly ten years before the TV series. It adapts the special prequel chapter printed at the end of Volume 5 of Aki Hamazi's manga, which looks at the sisters' past and the dream they shared.
Who are Seika and Nijika Ijichi?
Nijika is the cheerful drummer who leads Kessoku Band, the group at the heart of the TV series. Her older sister Seika runs STARRY, the live house where the band plays, and is known for her cool, blunt attitude. The film explores who they were before all of that, and what happened between them.
Staff, studio and teaser details confirmed so far
Director, writer and character designer
The movie is animated by CloverWorks, the studio behind the TV series. Shin Wakabayashi directs, the script is by Erika Yoshida, who handled series composition on the TV anime, and character designs are by Yukiko Horiguchi. The two leads return as well: Sayumi Suzushiro voices Nijika and Maaya Uchida voices Seika, just as they did in the series.
How the movie connects to Bocchi the Rock! Season 2
The film is a separate project from the TV anime's second season. Season 2 was announced back in February 2025 and is still in production at CloverWorks. The movie does not replace it, and it is not Season 2 in film form. Think of it as a side chapter about the Ijichi sisters while the main series continues behind the scenes.
What is still unannounced
Plenty, for now. There is no exact release date beyond the 2027 window, and nothing has been said about an international cinema release or streaming. We will update this story as soon as official details arrive.
Quick questions
When will the Bocchi the Rock! movie release?
The movie is scheduled to open in Japanese cinemas in 2027. No exact release date has been announced yet, and there is no international release or streaming news so far.
Is the movie a sequel or a prequel?
It is a prequel. "Hoshi no Ashiato" is set before the TV series and tells the story of Seika and Nijika Ijichi when they were younger, adapting the prequel chapter printed at the end of Volume 5 of the manga.
Do I need to watch Season 1 first?
You will get more from it if you have. The movie is about two supporting characters from the TV series (Nijika, the drummer of Kessoku Band, and her older sister Seika) so Season 1 gives you their story and the live house STARRY before the film goes back in time.
