One Piece Watch Order: How to Watch One Piece in Order
One Piece has been running since 1999 and has passed 1,100 episodes, so new viewers often ask the same question: where do I even start, and can I skip anything? The good news is that One Piece is one long, continuous story. You simply watch the TV series in episode order. The only real choices are the movies and the filler episodes. This guide walks you through the journey saga by saga.
The main watch order
The TV series is split into sagas, and each saga is made of smaller arcs. Watch them in this order:
- East Blue Saga: Luffy sets sail, gathers his first crewmates and heads for the Grand Line. The crew and their dreams are all set up here.
- Alabasta Saga: The Straw Hats help Princess Vivi save her desert kingdom from a secret crime group.
- Sky Island Saga: A city in the clouds, a self-declared god, and one of the most magical adventures in the series.
- Water 7 Saga: Trouble inside the crew, a rescue mission, and a battle with the World Government's secret agents. Many fans call this the emotional peak of early One Piece.
- Thriller Bark Saga: A spooky island ship full of zombies and shadows, with a lighter, funnier tone.
- Summit War Saga: The story grows bigger: the crew is scattered, and Luffy is pulled into a war between pirates and the Navy.
- Fish-Man Island Saga: After a two-year time skip, the reunited crew dives 10,000 metres under the sea.
- Dressrosa Saga: A toy-filled kingdom, a dangerous alliance, and a clash with the warlord Doflamingo.
- Whole Cake Island Saga: A rescue mission inside the territory of the Emperor Big Mom.
- Wano Country Saga: A long, beloved samurai epic as the crew helps free the closed land of Wano.
- Egghead and beyond: The story enters its final phase on a futuristic island, and the adventure continues in the land of the giants, Elbaph. The series is still airing, so this is where ongoing episodes pick up.
What about the movies?
There are more than a dozen One Piece movies, and none of them are needed for the main story. They are side adventures. Watch them whenever you feel like a break from the arcs. The most popular picks are Strong World, Film Z, Film Gold and Film Red. If you watch them roughly in release order, you will always know the crew members who appear.
Can I skip the filler?
Yes. Compared with other long-running series, One Piece keeps its filler light, about one episode in ten. The famous sagas above are all story content, and filler usually arrives as short, self-contained breaks between arcs. Skipping it is safe, though some filler mini-arcs are charming if you end up loving the crew and want more time with them.
Is it worth starting such a long series?
Think of One Piece as a journey, not a race. The early episodes are simpler and slower than modern anime, but the world, the crew and the payoffs grow with every saga, and story threads planted in the first episodes are still paying off today. A few episodes a week is a perfectly good pace. When you are ready, start with episode 1 on the One Piece page, and if you are brand new to anime in general, our list of the best anime for beginners can help you warm up first.
Quick questions
Can I skip One Piece filler episodes?
Yes. One Piece has less filler than most long series, roughly one episode in ten, and the story arcs listed above are the main path. Skipping filler will not make you miss any important story.
Do I need to watch the One Piece movies?
No. The movies are side stories and are not needed to follow the TV series. Film Red and Film Gold are good fun once you know the crew, but watch them whenever you like.
Where does the One Piece anime start, East Blue or Romance Dawn?
They are the same beginning. The first arc is often called both the Romance Dawn arc and the start of the East Blue Saga. Start at episode 1 and you are in the right place.
