Faye Valentine
From Cowboy Bebop
Faye Valentine is a main character in Cowboy Bebop, a sharp-tongued con artist and gambler who was cryogenically frozen for 54 years and woke up with no memories and a huge medical debt. She talks her way onto the Bebop crew and keeps threatening to leave it. She is voiced by Megumi Hayashibara in Japanese and Wendee Lee in English.
About Faye Valentine
A con artist and gambler who was frozen in cryosleep after an accident and revived 54 years later with no memories, no family and a mountain of medical debt. Faye joins the Bebop between schemes, always ready to betray the crew for a big score, and somehow always ends up back on the ship. Her search for her lost past, and the home video of her younger self, is one of the series' most moving threads.
Appearance
Faye looks like a confident woman of 23, with violet hair worn in a bob with a headband, striking green eyes and a gambler's smirk. Her usual outfit is famously eye-catching, a cropped yellow top, yellow shorts, a red jacket slung over her shoulders and white boots, chosen, like everything about her, to distract and disarm. She carries herself like she owns every room she walks into, which is exactly the impression she wants to give, whether or not she has a single woolong to her name.
Personality
Faye is bold, selfish, funny and completely allergic to honesty about her feelings. She lies, gambles, steals the crew's money and vanishes, then drifts back to the Bebop anyway. Years of being used by people who 'helped' her after her revival taught her to take first and trust never. But the defences crack: she fiercely protects the crew she claims not to care about, and her search for her forgotten past shows a lonely girl underneath the femme fatale act, looking for a place that still remembers her.
Background & Story
Faye was born in 1994 and grew up in a wealthy family before a space travel accident left her critically injured. With no treatment available, she was placed in cryogenic suspension, and stayed frozen for 54 years. She woke in 2054 with total amnesia, no family, no money and a medical bill she could never pay. Conned and loaded with other people's debts, she survived the only way left to her: gambling, grifting and running. Her double-crossing path eventually collides, twice, with Spike and Jet's bounty hunting, and the Bebop, to her own surprise, starts to feel like the first home she has had in either of her lives.
Powers & Abilities
- Con Artistry: Faye is a professional grifter who can lie, flirt, bluff and improvise her way into casinos, crime dens and other people's money.
- Gambling and Card Skills: A high-stakes gambler with sharp card skills and sharper instincts for odds, though her luck with money is famously worse than her skill.
- Piloting the Red Tail: Faye flies the heavily armed mono-pod Red Tail, handling dogfights and getaways with aggressive flair.
- Marksmanship: She is quick and confident with her Glock 30 pistol, and far more dangerous in a fight than her act suggests.
Key Relationships
- Spike Spiegel: Her fellow bounty hunter and favourite argument, the two trade insults constantly while quietly covering each other in a fight.
- Jet Black: The Bebop's owner, whose food she eats and whose rules she breaks; he scolds her like family because, by now, she is.
- Edward: The child hacker Faye pretends to find annoying, though Ed sees through her act faster than anyone on the ship.
- Ein: The crew's data dog, one of the few living things Faye is openly soft with when she thinks nobody is watching.
